Neck Pain
Lose the pain in the neck.
Don’t ignore neck pain.
Your neck is the most mobile and flexible part of your spine. Because of that, it is also the most vulnerable to pain and injury. For many people, neck pain is a temporary condition that disappears over time. For others, only medical diagnosis and proper treatment can relieve their pain and symptoms.
Neck pain may result from soft-tissue abnormalities in the muscles (muscle strain), ligaments and nerves as well as in bones and joints of the spine. The most common causes of neck pain are traumatic injury or prolonged wear and tear. In rare cases, infection or tumors may cause neck pain. Regardless, neck pain should never be ignored.
Degenerative diseases that cause neck pain include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis usually occurs in older people as a result of wear on the joints between the neck bones. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause destruction of the joints of the neck. Both major types of arthritis can cause neck stiffness and pain.
Cervical disc degeneration can also cause neck pain. Cervical discs act as shock absorbers between the neck bones. In cervical disc degeneration (typically occurs after age 40), the normal gelatin-like center of the disc degrades. The space between the vertebrae narrows.
Auto accidents, contact sports and falls can cause neck injury. A “rear end” automobile collision may cause hyperextension (backward motion of the neck beyond normal limits) and hyperflexion (forward motion of the neck beyond normal limits).
